SSC Club Sports Activities

Club members sponsor and/or host a variety of sporting activities, many of which are detailed here.

Biking

Bike trips usually occur during the months of May - October. Denver and surrounding communities have an excellent trail system. Members are encouraged to recommend their favorite biking trails.

All biking is on paved trails or wide dirt trails such as the Highline Canal. There is no all-terrain biking and no street biking and only easy riding trails with no severe altitude changes are selected. The bike trips start from a location and return to that same location. The length of the trips averages around 15 miles round-trip. Lunch at a nearby restaurant is usually part of the ride at the half-way point or after the ride is completed.

Billiards

Billiards (mostly known as pool) is played at a local establishment (most recently Felt Billiards near Hampden and Broadway).  This is friendly non-competitive play for all skill levels.  Players will be teamed up with other players and 8-ball is the usual game played.  Often players will go for an early dinner or happy hour after playing.

Bowling

Most often bowling will occur on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and will consist of bowling three games. This is a non-competitive, friendly atmosphere with a wide range of abilities and is usually attended by a good mix of men and women. All abilities are invited. Handicaps are developed for each person and an individual woman and a man as well as the high team is awarded a small prize for their efforts for each game.

We have found a bowling center that is reasonably priced. Our recent rates are $3 per game and $4 for rental shoes. Often dinners at restaurants located near the bowling center will follow the bowling. Dinner is optional.

Golf

Both the 9-hole and 18-hole SSC golf programs begin in May and run through October. Annually SSC plays approximately 40 different courses in the Denver Metro and surrounding areas.  SSC has a Golf Extravaganza Best Ball Tournament and at least one Fall golf trip is scheduled each year.  Players usually stay at the course or go to a nearby restaurant to enjoy food and drinks following golf.

Hiking

Hiking and snowshoeing will occur throughout the year based on the weather and conditions of the trails. These events mostly occur on a week day to avoid the weekend crowds but the day of the week is flexible based on the availability of the participants. The hiking/snowshoeing locations generally will be in the Denver metropolitan area or foothills locations so that the drive time is no more than an hour but occasionally we may go to more distant locations such as Evergreen, Nederland or Summit county. Carpooling is done whenever possible. Lunch usually follows the hike but is optional.

All events are on trails that are rated as easy to moderate and will most often have a limit of up to 5 miles in distance. Winter hikes usually do not require snowshoes but if so, extra pairs are available to borrow. Members are encouraged to recommend their favorite trails. Overnight trips have become popular and there will be an effort to have one of these each year.

Pickleball

Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn. It is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net. It is played with a paddle and a plastic ball.
